Most applicants get their AusCheck background check result quickly. But some applications may take longer due to factors like criminal history and security checks.
Once an issuing body, organising body or responsible entity approves an application and verifies the applicant's identity, the application is submitted to AusCheck. We send it to our partner agencies to do the required background checks. The results are then returned to AusCheck.
We recommend applicants submit their application at least 6 weeks before they need their background check finalised. This allows enough time for the background checks, processing, card creation and dispatch.

Up to 3 weeks
- Status: 75% of applications are processed within 3 weeks of us receiving them
- What you can do: No action required – this is within standard processing timeframe
3 to 8 weeks
- Status: Some applications may take longer due to factors like criminal history and security checks
- What you can do: No action required – this is within standard processing timeframe for applications that require additional checks
Over 8 weeks
- Status: There are circumstances when a background check will take longer than 8 weeks
